The first alert

The first alert should come from the village, not the hospital.

VHTs and CHEWs are trained to spot warning signs, report immediately and support the district response, so outbreaks are contained early.

COHEAL VHTs and CHEWs at a community disease surveillance meeting

What we do

How COHEAL surveillance works

Detect early

VHTs and CHEWs are trained to recognize warning signs of priority diseases (Ebola, mpox, cholera, measles, anthrax) and report unusual illness and deaths immediately.

Report and trace

Village reports reach district teams through eCHIS and district channels. We support contact tracing once an outbreak is confirmed.

Warn and inform

Local leaders, schools, churches and mosques share accurate health messages in local languages, counter rumors and build trust so people come forward for testing and care.

Respond fast

Pre-positioned response kits (protective equipment, handwashing and water-treatment supplies, referral tools) let VHTs act from the first case.

Support community surveillance

Training a VHT to detect and report disease costs less than a single hospital admission. Your support puts more eyes and ears in communities that need it most.
