Preparing communities for the season that keeps getting worse

Landslides, floods and drought arrive every year. We help communities map the risk, agree what to do, and protect health while they do it.

Programme overview

Strengthen community resilience and preparedness systems for climate-related health and livelihood risks.

Uganda's highlands and floodplains face landslides, floods and drought that are worsening with climate change - and smoke from cooking fires adds a daily, indoor health risk. We work through VHTs, local councils and schools so preparedness is a community habit, not a project document.

What we focus on

Climate adaptation & environmental health

Practical measures at household level that reduce exposure to smoke, unsafe water and extreme weather.

WASH & disaster preparedness

Safe water, hygiene promotion and local readiness for floods and landslides.

Community-led conservation

Tree planting, waste management and environmental action led by community groups and schools.

Climate-smart livelihoods

Household practices that hold up when a season fails, linked to our livelihoods programme.

Priority target groups

Climate-vulnerable households

Slum and underserved communities

Women, youth and community groups

Schools and local institutions

Core operational priorities

  • Implement climate adaptation and environmental health interventions
  • Strengthen WASH, disaster preparedness and community resilience systems
  • Support community-led environmental conservation and climate action
  • Promote climate-smart livelihoods and sustainable green solutions

Key outcomes

  • Increased access to environmental health and WASH services
  • Strengthened preparedness for climate shocks
  • Expanded climate-smart community practices
  • Reduced climate-related vulnerability

Programme impact

What changes when a community prepares

Hazard maps that exist

Landslide slopes, flood zones and lightning hotspots identified with the people who live beside them.

Cleaner cooking

Less smoke in the kitchen means less eye irritation and fewer respiratory infections.

Warnings that travel

Village early warning linked to district disaster management committees, so a signal becomes a response.

Help a community prepare before the season turns

Hazard maps, safe water and clean cooking are inexpensive. Recovering from a flood is not.
